Experience the thrill of the grape harvest, without committing to the full cycle of winemaking. All the fun, none of the commitment.
We’re excited to further open up the joy of winemaking with day passes to select winemaking workshops throughout the year. Stage 2 of winemaking is pressing. Our wine, after fermenting for two weeks is ready to be taken off the skins. In this workshop, we will be using a basket press to separate the skins from the juice (wine) and apply pressure to the skins to extract the colour and tannins that Heathcote Shiraz is known for. There is a little bit of work involved, in bucketing out our must (mixture of skins and juice), but there is a lot of fun too. Throughout the pressing, we will taste the difference between the light-bodied free run (the juice that runs straight off the press) and the pressings (the runoff squished out of the skins) and a blend of the two that will make up our community batch of Shiraz wine.
Introducing – Pressing Matters – Sunday March 24th..
Arrive from 12PM for a pizza lunch, before heading over to the winery at around 1PM to begin pressing. We’ll begin with a tour of the winery, plunging some of the fermenting wine (to witness the work that goes on behind the scenes), before we use the basket press to press off our batch of Shiraz to separate the skins from the must, learning about winemaking as we go.
Tickets are $25 per person and include a complimentary class of wine (food purchased separately) and involvement in the Pressing Matters workshop – a tour of the winery, participation in and learning how to press off shiraz with a basket press and a discussion about the next steps of winemaking. Kids are welcome to join in the event for free, but not in the tasting of the pressings, which are now alcoholic.
