We started pruning this week.
It marks the start of the new season as the last of the leaves have fallen and pruning focusses the mind on the year ahead. Often I find myself planning two years ahead as I position a bud with a view to having a can to wrap down next year.
It is always a bit daunting when we start pruning. There is no quick way to do it. It's one bud at a time. One vine at a time, one row a day. Things are a little easier these days as we get a neighbour to do a pre-prune with a box-pruner, which trims the canes down to about 20 cm in length and makes it a little easier to work with less clutter. We also use electronic pruning shears which save the muscles in the hands and lower arms.
Well, I better get out and get on with it
